  • FOX28 Investigation: Federal Government says South Bend Housing Authority misspent $500,000 and is now on the verge of "troubled" status

    An audit we've obtained through an open records request shows the authority inappropriately spent more than half a million dollars from a fund meant to cover housing assistance from 2010 to 2013.  HUD says the board has missed the deadline to submit a viable corrective action plan.

  • The top eight most dangerous intersections in St. Joe County

    Yesterday morning there was a fatal accident in South Bend. Dora Bonilla had just dropped her four year old off at school when her car collided with a semi-truck. And it wasn't the first time that kind of accident has happened at the intersection of State Road Two and Quince.In 2012, there were about 188,000 crashes in ALL of Indiana. Last year there were more than 2,000 traffic crashes in St. Joe County alone. And some of those crashes are happening at highly dangerous intersections.

  • Preventing elder abuse: getting back to the golden rule

    The Indiana Adult Protective Services received nearly 40,000 reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults last year. Of those reports, unit two which encompasses Kosciusko, St. Joseph, Marshall and Elkhart counties, received over 5,000 calls.

    The South Bend Common council normally pays a base $50,000 in fees. When there's union negotiations with the police and fire departments, that number goes up about $30,000.This year that cost almost tripled - totaling an estimated $175,985.
