In 1976, Bob's 19th Hole was founded by Bob and Vickie Schroeder with a simple goal: create a welcoming neighborhood place where people could enjoy good food, cold drinks, and great company. What began as a local gathering spot quickly became a South Bend tradition built on friendly service, familiar faces, and a true sense of community. Over the past 50 years, Bob’s has become a place where generations of customers have gathered after golf outings, long workdays, family celebrations, and Notre Dame weekends. The restaurant and bar earned a reputation for hearty meals, strong pours, and an atmosphere where regulars are greeted by name and newcomers quickly feel at home. As the business grew, the next generation of the Schroeder family helped guide Bob’s into the future. Bob and Vickie's son, Richard Schroeder, operated the business for nearly 20 years, bringing fresh ideas and forward-thinking improvements inspired by his education at Purdue’s restaurant and hospitality program. Under Richard’s leadership, Bob’s continued to evolve while still holding onto the welcoming atmosphere and customer relationships that made it special from the beginning. The restaurant adapted with changing times while remaining the kind of neighborhood establishment where conversations last longer than meals and customers become lifelong friends. Today, the tradition continues with Bob and Vicky’s granddaughter, Sara, who has owned Bob’s 19th Hole for the past nine years. Sara works alongside her mother, Jami — Richard’s sister — continuing the family tradition of hands-on ownership and personal service. Together, they have helped preserve the warm environment longtime customers cherish while continuing to move the business forward for a new generation. For many people in South Bend, Bob’s 19th Hole is more than just a restaurant or bar — it is part of their lives and memories. Some customers have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and retirements there, while others simply stop in because it feels like home. One customer even met his future wife at Bob’s. Stories like that are part of what has made Bob’s special for 50 years. Through three generations of family ownership, the commitment has remained the same: serve people well, treat customers like family, and create a place where memories continue to be made.
